Annual SACRE Lecture 2005

Wednesday 9th November
at Beal High School

'Many Paths, One Journey:
An agenda for religious education in British schools'

This year's lecture was given by Dr John Rudge

The lecture was the key event in an evening that
also included a number of cultural items.

The evening concluded with the opportunity
to meet others over a meal.

The fifteenth in the series of Redbridge SACRE lectures was given by Dr John Rudge. His speech, Many Paths, One Journey: An agenda for religious education in British schools took a rigorous and affirming look at the goals of RE in today's world and the potential that religion can have as a 'liberating and humanising force' to build a more harmonious society. A memorable contribution was also made by Joanne Bailey, sharing the behind the scenes reality of being an Advanced Skills teacher, and the many references to Bill Gent were appreciated by the audience and Bill himself! Rob Fox chaired the event and Philip Swallow bowed out with another speech full of bons mots and jokes worth repeating. The audience also enjoyed varied entertainment from Redbridge Music School, from Joplin's The Entertainer, played by the Brass Quintet, to the Hip Hop sounds of the World Beats samba band. Again, the 2005 event was ably hosted by Beal High School, with a fine buffet meal to complete the event. We went home proudly with Dr Rudge's words ringing in our ears, “on the RE map of Britain, Redbridge lights up when you press the button.”
